Zaptec’s Safety Approach

15. 03. 2023

Recently, we’ve received a lot of questions about how the Zaptec charging units meet and verify the safety requirements stated in product standards and installation norms.

Clarity and security about how regulations should be interpreted are necessary for installers and consumers. Zaptec continues to strictly interpret current rules and regulations. Our goal is that our chargers should harm no persons, vehicles, or property.

We want to inform you about the safety highlights for Zaptec Pro and Zaptec Go.

Safety highlights for Zaptec Pro

The Zaptec Pro is a charging unit specially designed for obtaining a scalable system, with a quick installation process and low infrastructure cost. To allow for this type of installation, some key product safety features must be met:

  1. Integrated MCB – that allows for installation on a common circuit branch by the fact that the integrated MCB makes sure that both short circuit and overcurrent situations are handled according to installation- and product standards. The internal MCB complies with IEC EN 60898-1 and IEC EN60947-2.
  1. Integrated RCD Type B – This RCD is according to IEC EN 61008-1/IEC EN 62423 and has been verified externally with test reports issued by a third-party tester. Consequently, the construction complies with the mechanically coupled (4 poles) requirement and the 500A make and break and 3000A short circuit tolerance requirements.
  1. Electrical safety according to IEC EN 61851-1 and other relevant standards. This has been tested by a third-party tester and includes testing of isolation during overvoltage conditions.

We have completed full third-party testing on the Zaptec Pro, and the report summary can be found here.

Safety highlights for Zaptec Go

The Zaptec Go is our domestic/home charging unit, where the goal has been to make the most cost-efficient split between the installation and product costs. The Zaptec Go has been through complete third-party tests, and it has been inspected by the Swedish Electrical Safety Agency (Elsäkerhetsvärket) without any technical remarks. The report from Swedish authorities is a public document and is available for download (PDF in Swedish)

Zaptec Go has:

  1. Integrated RDC-DD approved according to IEC 62955. The safety relay (4 poles) is mechanically coupled and meets the 500A make and break and 3000A short circuit tolerance requirements.
  2. Electrical safety according to IEC EN 61851-1 and other relevant standards. This has been tested and verified by a third-party tester and includes testing of isolation during overvoltage conditions.

The fact that the Zaptec Go has an integrated RDC-DD means that all Zaptec Go installations need an RCD Type A in front of the unit. Usually, this is met by installing a normal low-cost RCBO Type A, which combines the MCB and RCD functions in the fuse cabinet.
